Masculinities of Obama and 50 Cent

I just stumbled upon this YouTube, a short documentary examining black masculinity in the figures of Obama and 50 Cent.  I’m not one to paint Obama as a Messiah-figure or anything, but I do think the man is doing much more good than harm, and this is especially true for the African-American community.  But the short is also interesting as a window into the larger problem of what it means to be male.

If blacks have responded to this crisis by glorifying violence and thuggery, then whites have responded by doing the same with apathy, buffoonery, and ultimately, irrelevance.
